Visual Vernacular or What It Means to Tell a Story

When I was in my Ill 1 class, my instructor told us she was teaching us the "Visual Vernacular." Awesome alliteration aside (oh god, I kill myself), I really liked hearing it put that way. It was really apt describing visual elements and style as language, because really aren't all illustrators about telling stories?
